On Chick Corea

I'm sad to not to be able to play with him in this Life. A great musician with both jazz and classical perspectives he was doing his best for the good music. When I look at the new generation artist I don't actually find the determination as Chick used to have for the music. Specially his "Matrix" album has lots of new elements if we consider the year it was published. What I like about him was the sharpness in his playing and very high speeded thinking/imagining in the way of his music making process. This was also something new for the jazz music, including his piano sound/tone.

I also find the way he was on the electronic instruments. It has been very similar to how I approach too. Basically he was using maybe 2-3 different sounds on synthesizers and play them as he was playing piano, same sharpness and touch. For sure, there must be differences when it comes to the electronic and acoustic but if you take a closer look "he wasn't playing synthesizer to become a synthesizer player", probably it was for creating contrast to the piano; another color would make the piano stronger and the same thing vice versa. For example: Herbie Hancock has been playing "synthesizer" when he plays it.

Straight notes in the jazz playing another strong part of Chick's. He could play "swinging" too but he was on straight lines mostly. The drive and the perfect block chords of his something I always love. I also get inspired from him from time to time, specially when I use two different mods/scales at the same time as I would merge them together.

The World definitely needs more Chicks..
