To Be a Great Musician

01/08/2023

It's one of the huge controversies since the beginning of the music. To be able to talk about "being a great musician" we need to understand the science behind it. Yes, we all musicians are actually scientists. We develop ways, check the past ways, make it as a performance, record it and make it in a way that will carry the same value all over the World and the centuries. This is math, physics, philosophy, literature, psychology and more...

At first, we need to understand that the body is a tool, an instrument is a tool, the music is a tool. And each part needs a very detailed study to reach certain merits in music art. Music art is harder than others, because of this particular insides and you have to do it "at that moment". You can correct it with the following notes but still, you have to control the "moment".

How is the control on those 3 in the sense of flow, use of spaces, timing, creativity, newness, uniqueness, with the basis? And is it really consistent? Does answer the other periods of the music? If the situation is all filled with the "yes"s then we need to see the result from the different point of the views such as "inspiration". Does it affect the other kind of arts and for sure does it carry any good for the "music"? Is there any give to the history as a milestone? And, here is the word, is there anything new and uniqueness about the technique? What about the virtuosity? (Definitely not enough to be a "great musician" by itself).

Let's say in Turkey (my homeland) it's not very common to hear "great musician". In Europe, I used to hear it more and in USA, I did hear the most of those words. But, for me; if we say "Bach is a great musician" or "Jaco is a great musician", then I need to check who does reference me to listen a recording and what's really happening in there to be able to say "he/she is a great musician".

Intellectually, we can go deeper in this specific topic but each time you will sit at the instrument and do/make music you will still go into a dimension within yourself/outer-world, past-future and you still need to be at this moment and today (today as a holding point where your art would stand in the history).

To be a great musician, it's not important what you study but also what they will study after you.
